Stories from a 5-year-old

It looks like our family may have a young personal-historian-in-training! My grandson is only 5, but he captured his own thoughts and actually wrote them down. In fairness to his Dad, I do have to say his story may be just a wee bit exaggerated, for effect, I'm sure.

In case you can't read the original, I will take the liberty to interpret it for you here:
[sic] sum tems my dad dzit let me hav iscrm. My dad dz not evr let me hav pop mountain dew. I see my dad laying down.

So the question for you is this: If a 5-year-old can write a story, what's your excuse?

Well, that does it! My 6 yr old grandson in Corfu will be interviewing me via (recorded) Skype and will write something about me, too! (He's fluent in English but can only write in Greek, so we'll have to take his word for it.)

Wait til he hears a 5 year old did it!

(Just wonderful, Beth! Maybe you should have youtube channel!)

Patty & Barbara,
This may open a whole new audience for my work about writing family stories. I'd love to see letters from other kids.

Patty, your comment sounds like a Seuss-ism of the highest order!

Thanks to both of you.

Too darling.

It reminds me of saving my daughter's artwork where she wrote, "when I grow up, I want to be a mommy who drives a car". I thought this was cute until I read her classmate's poster 'when I grow up I want to be a girl chaser.'

My son is now in kindergarten and his reads,'when I grow up, I want to be every single thing.' I think we have a scanner in the making.

Beth, reading this reminds me to reverse storytell too - to write the stories of the kids while I still remember them vivdly.

Ooh, and you are also reminding me of another school project my daughter did about someone she admired in her family. She wrote about my stepmother 'she talks to me like I am grown up.' My stepmother died last year, and it's funny, that's what I loved best about her too.

Out of the mouths of babes.
Thank you for sharing this.

Elissa,
Thanks for sharing your stories. That's a great idea to jot down stories about the kids while they are fresh in your mind. Another idea is to work on a story together with them.

They can draw a picture about the event. I still use "remember when...?" conversation starters on the phone with the grandkids when I haven't seen them for a while. It helps us stay in touch remotely.
